Dear Scientists of Division 4,
Welcome back to the units of OPTICS!!!
I hope that last week's lesson presented something wonderful and intriguing for your learning.
Be prepared - there are a lot more exciting things that are going to happen in this unit.
Do you know how mirage is formed? (Do you even know what mirage is?)
Why is it that you can see through transparent objects, but not through opaque objects?
This week, we will delve further into understanding light as a wave and as a particle.
Hopefully, you will have answers to these questions by the end!
To complete your science mission of the week, do the following:

GAME PLAN TO LEARN: VIDEO – HOME SCIENCE – RESPONSE
________________________________________________________________________________________
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
[Big Idea] I can understand that energy can be transferred as both a particle and a wave.
[Content] I can learn about light as waves and particles.
[Curriculum]
I can make observations of my experiment to help me further understand the properties of light.
I can use my prior scientific knowledge to identify relationships between the conceptual understanding of the light and experiential understanding of the light.
I can communicate ideas, findings, and solutions to questions about the properties of light by using scientific language.

STEP 1: Watch a Video
(video clip goes here).
Key Ideas from the Video:
Why can I see through transparent objects, but not through opaque objects? (light, medium, wave)
Why can't I see in the dark? (light, medium, wave)
What is a mirage? How is it formed? (refraction, diffraction, interference)
Why do we see the reflection of ourselves in a mirror or calm waters? (reflection)
Why is it that we see rainbow colours when we aim light into a prism? (refraction, wavelength, amplitude, period, frequency, speed)
How do we get energy from the sun? (radio wave, microwave, infrared wave // ultraviolet light, x-ray, gamma rays)
Can we travel through time? (speed of light)
STEP 2: Home Science
Now that you have learned about the different phenomenon about light, it's time to put into practice our knowledge. Choose two the following home science to carry out as your experiment.
CHOICE 1: Reflection of Yourself in Water
In this experiment, you will be comparing a reflection of yourself between in calm water and in rippled water.
Concepts in this experiment: light, medium, wave, refraction, diffraction, interference, reflection
Materials needed: a bowl of water
CHOICE 2: Pencil in a Glass of Water
(https://leetheresasb.wixsite.com/education-journey/forum/optics/choice-2-pencil-in-a-glass-of-water)
In this experiment, you will be observing a pencil in a glass of water.
Concepts in this experiment: light, medium, wave, refraction, diffraction, interference, reflection
Materials needed: two pencils, two drinking glasses, and water
CHOICE 3: Disappearing Colour Wheel
(https://leetheresasb.wixsite.com/education-journey/forum/optics/choice-3-spinning-rainbow)
In this experiment, you will be observing the disappearance of colours as you spin a cardboard wheel.
Concepts in this experiment: light, wave, amplitude, wavelength, frequency, speed, period
Materials needed: disposable plate, scissors, ruler, pencil, cardboard, sharpies/markers, string,
STEP 4: Share Your Findings
In the discussion below, post:
a picture of your experiment
Answers to the questions of the experiment
STEP 5: Reply to a Peer
Respond to two of your peer's posts in the discussion.
Your response can discuss:
What you found interesting about their discussion post.
What you found their experiment observations similar/different from your experiment.
Anything positive you would like to add.
