Interview questions
Teaching as a vocation

I believe children are like fireworks, waiting to be lit. I want to help light them, both to discover their hidden talents and to explore what they can do when they burst forth upon the world.
I am attracted to teaching because I want to inspire students to discover their passions and hone their talents, to arouse inquiries and enable them to better serve their communities. As an Education Assistant, Tom was one of my students with a learning disability. (The actual name of the student has been replaced for privacy). I’ve had the privilege to work with him every class to critically analyze and solve problems. Though Tom initially feared math, through the joint effort of his perseverance and my support, he grew to overcome academic challenges, and developed his character as he gained greater resilience. To me, Tom was a dormant firework that sparkled with self-confidence and academic ability. Through this experience, I learned that I want to continually ignite the restless passions in my students; I yearn to help students work through whatever learning difficulties and academic challenges they have, to provoke critical thinking and inquiry; I aspire to challenge students to grow both academically and personally; and I encourage students to engage with their community so as to contribute their intellect and character.
It takes a while before a teacher can see their students launch with their restless creativity and potentiality, but this particular challenge is why I find teaching rewarding and joyful. I want to encounter another Tom who abandons his fear to take on the challenges of growth. I want to ignite passions in my students so they can burst into light into the deep sky of endless possibilities. I pursue to grow as a teacher.
Children are also like roses, blooming gradually with unique colours and beauty.
I am a Gardener, They are my Flowers
Here is a single rose growing,
taking its time to develop each petal with care.
No, I cannot rush the rose.
It will take its time to bloom because
only then will it know the full fragrance and the full beauty
that can be shared as a gift with rest of the garden
Here is a garden, full of surprises
I never know what to expect when I enter this garden.
Maybe today, the roses will bloom with glory
Or perhaps, the sunflowers will open its bud.
As a gardener, I am here for them;
Here to water them with knowledge;
Here to weed their fears, insecurities and fixed mindset;
Here to watch them develop in this beautiful garden.

Why did you choose the Middle Years / Self-Regulated Learning Cohort?
Middle Years (MY)
Although MY was actually not my first choice, I quickly realized that I could not have been more blessed than to have been placed in this very cohort.
Middle Year educators are trained with a special focus on teaching children in a critical transition period in their development. As children experience a dramatic change in emotional, physical and mental capacities, MY educators have a special role to guide these individuals to express their identity and discover the person they are becoming intellectually, socially and physically.

Self Regulated Learning (SRL)
I am eternally grateful I was placed in the SRL cohort because it equips me as an educator with an understanding and techniques necessary to help my students develop their self-directed regulation in cognition, behaviour and emotions.
Self-regulation is an essential and transferable skill that individuals will need to navigate their emerging adulthood. I am both privileged and honoured to embrace this key life skill in my students.
What are your interests, talents, and/or passions? How do you see yourself using these in the classroom with your students?
Developmental Psychology
My Bachelor of Arts in Psychology has a special focus on developmental psychology. During my undergraduate, I studied how a person develops throughout their lifespan.
With this background knowledge in psychology, I believe that my understanding and genuine interest would serve my profession as an educator in areas of social and developmental growth.
Technology
I have been working in the digital field since my undergraduate years. With this experience, I hope to bring education more accessible and engaging to both the students and their parents through the use of technology.
While I have very little experience with the use of technology in a classroom, I am thrilled to learn more on how our advanced technology can be used to help students learn and for their family to interact via online platforms.
Visual Arts /
Environmental Psychology
Ever since I was a young girl. I was always fascinated by how visual cues can influence the way we interact with both materials and other people.
I want to bring my passion for visual arts into a classroom to better those students who learn through visual cues. I also want to apply my understanding of environmental psychology to physically promote a space of inclusion and well-being through the use of plants, consistent and intuitive organization, and choice of colours.
What are your hopes and expectations for the coming year?
As of this very moment, I feel like this girl in the picture.
I am hiking on a mountain called the "education journey".
It's known to be a very beautiful adventure, yet one of the most challenging.
I cannot see very clearly what is before me, yet I am confident that it is nevertheless an amazing path I am treading on.
As I continue on this hike, I definitely hope to grow stronger as an educator;
to pick up necessary tools to teach on my way to the peak,
to develop my character as an educator who achieved a good balance between challenge and self-care, and to come to a greater understanding of how to listen to my students more attentively. More specifically, I want to grow in my understanding of inquiry-based pedagogy, student-centred classroom, and self-regulated learning.
