In this stimulation, you will be using home materials to create a pair of goggles to simulate an experience of having an eye condition. Then, you will be reflecting on the given questions and share them with your peers.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
[Big Idea] I can understand that energy can be transferred as both a particle and a wave.
[Content] I can learn about the eye conditions.
[Curriculum] I can demonstrate a sustained intellectual curiosity about eye diseases and function of eyes.
DISCLAIMER: your experience will not be the same as those who have the actual eye conditions. However, I hope this can be an experience for you to become more aware of those who have a different reality from yours. The purpose of this stimulation is to create curiosity and raise awareness about vision and eye conditions.
STEP 1: Choose your Eye Condition
Choose one of the following eye condition for their stimulation:
*** Check out (https://www.eyesiteonwellness.com/eye-diseases/) to see what eye condition interests to you!
Glaucoma
Macular degeneration
Diabetic retinopathy
Cataracts
Colour Deficiency
Presbyopia
Floaters
Night Blindness
Diplopia
Astigmatism
Myopia
Dry Eyes
STEP 2: Create your Stimulation Goggles/Glasses
To create the simulation experience, find a pair of goggles or glasses.
Make changes to the lens to fit the description of the eye condition. Be creative with your goggles/glasses.
Some excellent ways I've seen before included thinly layering Vaseline or tape cut-out paper on to the lens.
CONSIDER: Get a Helper
Ask someone to be your guide during your stimulation, if you're uncomfortable doing the stimulation alone.
This is to ensure you're being kept safe throughout your experiment.
STEP 3: Do Three Items of Routines
After creating your stimulation goggles/glasses, choose any three of the listed routine to try out during your stimulation. Remember to take pictures to document your stimulation!
Fix a snack (please refrain from using any use sharp objects!)
Climb up/down the stairs
Text a friend how your day is going
Do a chore (washing dishes, cleaning your closet, vacuum the floor)
Apply makeup (maybe not eyeliner, since I don't want you to poke your eye)
Write a note saying "__ was here"
STEP 4: Reflection Questions
Reflect on your stimulation experience. Give some insight into the following questions:
What is the eye condition you chose for your stimulation?
Why did you choose this eye condition in particular?
What are your initial thoughts on the stimulation after having done it?
Reflect back on the routines you did. What did you do? What were some of the difficulties you face? Any surprising observations?
Relating your experience to those who actually have the eye condition, how do you think their life might be different from your stimulation experience?
What are some of your thoughts on eye conditions?
Or thoughts you have on vision, in general? What questions do you still have?
STEP 5: Share your Experience
Answer the reflection questions from STEP 4 in any of the following formats.
You will be marked on your depth of reflection and learning experience.
Include photos you took during the stimulation in your sharing.
Video. max 3-5 minutes. Be sure the audio is clear, and lighting is good.
Reflection Write-up.
FINAL STEP: Submission & Post
Well done :) Now all you have to do is
Submit your sharing file from STEP 5 in the discussions below.
Read two of your classmate's responses and give a response.
Please try to respond to someone who does not have a response yet.
If everyone has a response, then it is fair game :)
